What is the ruling regarding a man who wasted years in disobedience, then repented and learned what was obligatory upon him; is it permissible for him to stop seeking knowledge and devote himself solely to worship, in compensation for what he missed?

One must combine the duties of this world and the hereafter. Therefore, it is necessary to strive to earn a livelihood and fulfill obligatory duties. After that, one can exert effort in supererogatory acts to the best of their ability. If a person is self-sufficient financially, there is no harm in dedicating oneself to worship and striving in supererogatory acts. However, seeking sacred knowledge, disseminating it, and teaching it is better than merely dedicating oneself to supererogatory acts of worship, for those who are qualified for it. Otherwise, there is no harm in dedicating oneself to worship while observing the fulfillment of rights and obligations.
