Who is Shuʿayb? Is he a prophet, and in what era and place did he appear?

Al-Shawkani mentioned that Shu'ayb was the son of Mika'il, son of Yashjub, son of Madyan, son of Ibrahim. All accounts trace his lineage back to Ibrahim al-Khalil. He was a sent prophet, as Allah Almighty said: "And to Madyan [We sent] their brother Shu'ayb" (Quran 7:85) and "The companions of the thicket denied the messengers, when Shu'ayb said to them, 'Will you not fear Allah? Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger'" (Quran 26:177-178). He was in Madyan, in the land of Sham, between Ma'an and Tabuk, and lived in the period between the time of Yusuf and Musa, peace be upon them.
