ما هو معنى حديث: "رُفِعَ عَنْ أُمَّتِي الْخَطَأُ وَالنِّسْيَانُ وَمَا اسْتُكْرِهُوا عَلَيْهِ"؟

The aforementioned hadith was narrated by Ibn Majah, Ibn Hibban, and others, and it is an authentic hadith. Its meaning is that Allah the Almighty has lifted from this Ummah sin and hardship concerning what they do out of error, forgetfulness, or compulsion. This is substantiated by the words of Allah the Almighty: "And there is no blame upon you for that in which you have erred, but [only for] what your hearts have intended," and His words, the Almighty: "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred," and His words, the Almighty: "except for one who is compelled [to renounce his religion] while his heart is secure in faith."

However, the lifting of accountability and the pen from those mentioned does not include liability for damaging people's property. Such property remains guaranteed by the one who damaged it in all cases; deliberate action and error are the same in this regard. Ibn Abd al-Barr said: "They have all agreed that his (peace be upon him) saying, 'The error and forgetfulness of my Ummah have been lifted…' does not apply to the damage of property; rather, it refers to the lifting of sins."
