What is meant by "ملكوا الدنيا" (they ruled the world) in the context of the four kings who ruled it (Dhu al-Qarnayn, Solomon, Nebuchadnezzar, and Nimrod)?

Nimrod was granted kingship by Allah. As for Dhul-Qarnayn, Allah established him on earth and granted him the means for everything, through which he came to possess the Easts of the earth and its Wests, and lands submitted to him and kings humbled themselves before him.
