What is the ruling on selling onions while they are still in the ground and before they ripen and are harvested?

Selling onions before their صلاح (readiness/soundness) becomes apparent is not permissible according to Islamic law, due to the Prophet's (peace be upon him) prohibition of selling fruits until their صلاح becomes apparent. The صلاح of onions is when they are fully formed and can be utilized. The permissible alternative to this invalid contract is the salam (forward) contract.
