This is one of the virtuous deeds for which its doer is hoped to be saved from the Fire on the Day of Resurrection, as evidenced by the hadith: "Whoever defends the honor of his brother from backbiting, it is a right upon Allah to free him from the Fire," and the hadith: "Whoever defends the honor of his brother, Allah will defend his face from the Fire on the Day of Resurrection." As for whoever speaks about a believer with something that is not in him, it is feared for him that Allah will make him dwell in Radghat al-Khabal until he retracts what he said, as evidenced by the hadith: "Whoever says about a believer what is not in him, Allah will make him dwell in Radghat al-Khabal until he retracts what he said."
