He who pledges to Allah not to do something, that is an oath (), and a covenant ('ahd) is stronger than an oath. Expiation for breaking a covenant is required, which is the same as the expiation for breaking an oath: feeding ten poor persons or clothing them, or fasting for three days for whoever cannot afford that. The expiation is not repeated unless the wording of the covenant implies repetition. A Muslim should fear Allah, be in awe of Him, and be ashamed before Him in secret and in public, and should supplicate frequently.
