What is the ruling on taking usurious money to spend on oneself and one's children if there is no other source of money?
The profits from banks are usury (riba), which is forbidden and one of the seven grave destructive sins. It is not permissible to take these profits; rather, one must be content with the principal amount withdrawn from the bank, repent, seek forgiveness, and pursue lawful sustenance. Allah Almighty says: (O you who have believed, fear Allah and give up what remains [due to you] of usury, if you should be believers. And if you do not, then be informed of a war [against you] from Allah and His Messenger. But if you repent, you may have your principal – [thus] you do no wrong, nor are you wronged) [Al-Baqarah: 278-279]. One must be cautious about feeding children with forbidden usurious money, for "every flesh that grows from unlawful earnings, the Fire is more befitting for it." Money can be invested in permissible trade or deposited in an Islamic bank to acquire lawful profit, and whoever fears Allah, He will make for him a way out and provide for him from where he does not expect.
