"Hypothetical jurisprudence is the investigation of issues that have not yet occurred, by assuming their occurrence. This is particularly common in Hanafi jurisprudence. Scholars have differed concerning it; some disliked engaging in it, while others permitted it as a way to prepare rulings for incidents before they happen. However, excessive hypothesizing about impossible issues is unproductive. As for researching issues that are possible to occur, there is no harm in it as long as it does not distract from what is more important. Indeed, some hypothetically assumed issues from the past have materialized in our time, such as sex change, artificial insemination, and organ transplantation."
