What is condolences, what are its characteristics, and what is its timing?

Condolence is about comforting the afflicted and strengthening them in their tribulation. It is offered to anyone afflicted by the loss of a loved one or wealth. The best forms of condolence are what has been authentically reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Indeed, to Allah belongs what He has taken, and to Him belongs what He has given, and everything with Him is for an appointed term. So be patient and seek reward." Condolence is permissible before and after burial. Its time extends from the moment the calamity occurs until its effect subsides from the soul of the afflicted. Its purpose is to strengthen the afflicted and to seek reward.
