Is it obligatory for a person to forgive and pardon whoever curses or strikes him, even if that would encourage the aggressor to commit further transgressions?

He who has been afflicted by harm, whether through verbal abuse, insult, or physical assault, has three options: forgiveness and overlooking the offense, or postponing retribution until the Day of Judgment, or seeking justice equitably and responding to the evil deed with its like. Forgiveness is often best, unless it leads to an increase in the oppressor's tyranny, in which case seeking justice is better. Ibn 'Uthaymeen said: Forgiveness is good if it brings about reform. But if the wrongdoer is known for rebellion and transgression, then it is better not to forgive him, because forgiveness will increase his evil. However, if the error is rare, then forgiveness is better.
