No has been found with the wording "the supplication of forty strangers is answered" or "the supplication of a stranger for a stranger is answered." The first saying may be extracted from the hadith: "There is no Muslim man who dies, and forty men stand over his funeral, none of whom associate anything with Allah, except that Allah will intercede for him," where "strangers" may refer to travelers whose supplication is answered. As for the second saying, it might refer to the hadith: "No supplication is answered faster than the supplication of one absent for another absent," which is a weak hadith. The term "absent" here refers to supplication in the absence of the person generally, and not specifically a stranger away from his homeland. The supplication of a Muslim for his brother in his absence is answered.
