Were the seas and fish known in the time of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace? And did the Companions master languages other than Arabic? And were the People of the Book and their scriptures (the Gospel and others) present in the time of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace?
The Companions were familiar with the seas, and they sailed them for the migration to Abyssinia. One of them asked the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, about ablution with seawater, and he replied: "Its water is pure and its dead are lawful to eat." They also knew other languages; some knew Abyssinian, while others mastered the language of the Jews, and Zayd ibn Thabit learned Syriac by the order of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. The People of the Book, both Christians and Jews, were present in the Arabian Peninsula and had their scriptures which they recited.
