Is it permissible for my wife to return to the room after I swore an oath of divorce upon her if I did not sleep in it, and after I intended the divorce for that night only?

If a husband swears an oath that his wife shall not sleep in the room, the basic principle is that the oath should be taken at face value. The intention affects the oath if it accompanies the utterance; if the intention comes later, it is of no avail. If the wife sleeps in the room, the divorce occurs. It does not repeat with repeated instances of her sleeping there unless the husband intended that. It is incumbent upon both spouses to preserve the stability of their lives and to avoid using divorce as a means to solve problems. A Muslim must uphold his oath and not frequently swear oaths.
