It is forbidden to eat an animal that has fallen (or is about to die) unless it is slaughtered while it still has a stable life. For the slaughter to be valid, it must be performed at the throat or the upper chest (labba). An exception is made for an animal that cannot be slaughtered in the usual manner, such as one that has fallen into a well. In such a case, it is wounded anywhere on its body in a way that causes its death. However, if its death is not due to the wound, for example, if its head is in water, then it is not permissible to eat it.
