When did the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, pass away?
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, passed away on the forenoon of Monday, the twelfth of Rabi' al-Awwal, in the eleventh year of the Hijra. Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, described that day as the darkest and most abhorrent.
Before his death, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, drew back the curtain of Aisha's chamber during Fajr prayer. He looked at the Companions praying behind Abu Bakr and smiled, then gestured for them to complete their prayer, and returned to his chamber.
His death throes, peace and blessings be upon him, began, and Aisha was supporting him. Abd al-Rahman entered with a siwak (tooth-stick) in his hand. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, gestured with his head that he wanted it. So Aisha took it and softened it for him.
After finishing with the siwak, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, raised his hand and fixed his gaze towards the ceiling. His lips moved as he said: "With those upon whom You have bestowed favor from among the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous. O Allah, forgive me, and have mercy upon me, and join me with the Most Exalted Companion. O Allah, the Most Exalted Companion." Then his hand fell, and he passed away.
