Muslims suffered torment and persecution from the polytheists in Mecca, which forced them to migrate secretly to Abyssinia. The first migration took place in the fifth year of prophethood, when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded them to migrate to the Negus, the just king of Abyssinia. This migration consisted of twelve men and four women, led by Uthman ibn Affan, accompanied by Ruqayyah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. As for the second migration, the number of emigrants was eighty-three men and eighteen or nineteen women.
