Why is a husband unable to consort with his first wife and abandons her, while he consorts with his second wife?

It is not permissible for a man to abandon his wife for a period that causes her harm, nor is it permissible for him to abstain from intercourse with one of his wives to conserve his strength for the other, just as it is not permissible for him to order one of them to serve him so as to relieve the other.

A husband's harming of his wife, whether by abandonment or otherwise, contradicts the good companionship enjoined by Islamic law. Furthermore, his masturbation and watching of pornographic films are reprehensible acts.

He should be gently and kindly advised to fear Allah and give each wife her due. If he does not mend his ways, she has the right to seek a divorce due to harm. If he refuses, she should refer her case to the Sharia judge.
