Is it permissible for a latecomer to be led by another latecomer to complete the prayer after the Imam has given the salutation?

Scholars have differed on the issue of whether a latecomer (masbuq) can complete his prayer behind another latecomer during the salah. Sheikh Muhammad ibn Uthaymeen favored its permissibility, citing as evidence Abu Bakr and the Companions' transition from one imam to another during the Prophet's illness (peace be upon him). Some scholars, however, held it impermissible due to the absence of a valid excuse and because it was not known during the era of the Salaf.

The preponderant opinion is that performing it is permissible, but it is not recommended (mustahabb) or legislated (mashroo'). Latecomers should not agree to do this, because the Salaf did not do it, and if it were good, they would have preceded us to it.
