What is the legal status of a wife who has been granted a judicial khul' (divorce) in Egypt from a husband who holds another nationality, while he still considers her his wife by virtue of another marriage contract concluded in his country? Khul' (divorce at the wife's instance) occurs by the ruling of a Muslim judge. If the woman has obtained khul' from her husband by the ruling of a Muslim judge, has become irrevocably separated from him, and her 'iddah (definition) (waiting period) has ended, then she is permitted to marry another man. The fact that she remains a wife in the American contract does not entail the continuation of the marriage in the Shari'ah.
