What is the ruling on dyeing the beard black, and what is the interpretation of the prohibition in the Hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding Abu Quhafah?

Jurists have differed concerning the ruling on dyeing hair black. The correct view, indicated by the Sunnah, is that it is forbidden, and this is the position of the Shafi'i school. The evidence for its prohibition is the Hadith of Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him: "Change this, but avoid black," and the Hadith of Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both: "There will be people at the end of time who will dye their hair black like the crops of pigeons; they will not smell the fragrance of Paradise." There is no difference in the prohibition of dyeing hair black between men and women.
