The question

What is the ruling on receiving a loan of $150,000 in 1990, whose value has now decreased to $1,500 in 2001, knowing that no payment method was agreed upon, and should the repayment be in dollars or in the local currency whose name changed from Sudanese Pound to Dinar?

The answer

Judgment shall be for the same amount with which the debtor was lent, regardless of its value at the time of performance, unless the type of money that was in the debt ceases to exist, in which case its value at the time of cessation and maturity shall be paid. Accordingly, the debtor is obliged to pay the value of the Sudanese pound at the time the government invalidated its use. The loan should be viewed as an act of piety, seeking reward from Allah, and the borrower should repay it well.
