Regarding an apartment sold, is zakat to be paid on its price for one year, before or after settling debts?
Zakat is not obligatory on an empty apartment unless it was purchased with the intention of trade. In that case, zakat is due on it every year upon the completion of a full lunar year (hawl) from the original capital. Its value should be assessed, and a quarter of a tenth (2.5%) of its value should be given as zakat. If zakat was not paid until it was sold, then zakat for all past years must be paid. However, if it was not purchased with the intention of trade, then there is no zakat on it. If it is sold and a full lunar year (hawl) passes on its price, provided it reaches the nisab (minimum threshold), then zakat is due on it.
