The methodology of Ahl al-Sunnah is not to delve into its details or to deem any of them mistaken, but rather to find excuses for all of them. Indeed, Hafiz al-Hakami said: "Then silence is obligatory concerning what occurred === between them of deeds that were decreed, for all of them were mujtahid and rewarded === their error is forgiven by the Bestower." And Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz said: "That was a nation that has passed on. They have what they earned, and you have what you earned. And you will not be asked about what they used to do." And some of the Salaf said: "It was a tribulation from which Allah purified our swords, so let us purify our tongues from it."
