Is it Sunnah to fast the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is sunnah for a Muslim to fast the first nine days of Dhul-Hijjah, with the ninth day being the most emphasized. However, for a pilgrim (Hajj), it is better not to fast on the day of Arafah. The proof for this is what Hafsa narrated: "There are four things that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, never used to leave: fasting Ashura, the [first] ten [days of Dhul-Hijjah], three days of every month, and the two rak'ahs before Fajr (dawn prayer)." Also, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Fasting on the Day of Arafah expiates the sins of the past year and the coming year, and fasting on the Day of Ashura expiates the sins of the past year."
