What is the ruling on a student recording the attendance of her classmate on her behalf, if the classmate is absent for the purpose of studying due to the hardship of daily travel to the university, knowing that attendance contributes to grades?

It is not permissible for a student to sign in for attendance on behalf of her classmate, due to the lying and deception involved, which are forbidden in Sharia. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, lying leads to wickedness, and indeed, wickedness leads to the Hellfire," and his saying: "Whoever cheats is not of us." If the travel is arduous, the student can request absence from the professors.
