The answer

The Day of Karbala is the day of the martyrdom of Hussein ibn Ali, may Allah be pleased with them both, at the hands of wicked oppressors. However, it is not permissible to celebrate it, or to offer congratulations because of it, or to hold mourning ceremonies on it. Although the killing of Hussein was a calamity and his steadfastness was the steadfastness of heroes, those who were better than him, such as Umar, Uthman, and Ali, may Allah be pleased with them, were martyred, and what is being done today for Hussein was not done for them. A Muslim must avoid these innovations and newly invented matters, which do not indicate love for the pious predecessors and the Companions, because loving them necessitates following their guidance.
