What is the ruling on a married woman going to the mosque for prayer, and is it obligatory or a Sunnah?

Congregational prayer is not obligatory for women, neither in the mosque nor at home. If they pray in congregation, there is no harm upon them; rather, it may be recommended by some scholars. Their going out to mosques is conditional upon being safe from fitna (temptation/strife). The basic permissibility for women to attend congregational prayer is indicated by the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "If one of your women asks permission to go to the mosque, do not prevent her." A woman's prayer in her home is better for her than her prayer with the congregation in the mosque, due to the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Do not prevent the female servants of Allah from the mosques of Allah, but their homes are better for them." If a woman goes out to the mosque, she must refrain from perfume, dress modestly, and avoid crowding men.
