What is the wisdom behind prophets being afflicted with calamities, even though calamities are caused by sins and atone for them?

Sins are not the only cause of calamities, for trials (بلايا) may be for elevating ranks or expiating sins. The people most afflicted by trials are the prophets, then the next best, and then the next best. A person is tried according to their faith. Allah the Almighty indeed tested the prophets with harm from their people and various calamities. The wisdom behind testing the prophets is their deserving of Allah's perfect honor, and to offer solace to the nations who came after them, and for the disbelievers to deserve immediate and delayed punishment. Moreover, trials lead the servant to the highest stations and the most perfect goals.
