Most sleeping pills contain sedative or narcotic substances in small proportions, and cause side effects and addiction. It is not permissible to take them except after consulting a trusted physician who deems them absolutely necessary to relieve anxiety or tension. Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen issued a permitting their use in cases of extreme necessity, provided that it is under the supervision and authorization of a specialized physician.
