Is it permissible to retract a vow made to Allah not to do a certain thing without falling into sin?

If the covenant is to abandon an obligatory matter, such as backbiting and reviling, then it is not permissible to retract it, because abandoning what is forbidden is originally obligatory. If a person breaks his covenant, he has sinned and is liable for an expiation for breaking an oath.
