Is research that suggests the Beautiful Names of Allah are more than 99, and that what is mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah are only 99 Names, considered a departure from the consensus of the Ummah? And is the researcher an innovator (mubtadi')? And are the conditions set by the researcher for extracting the Beautiful Names an innovation (bid'ah)? And does publishing such research stir up discord (fitna)?

The names of Allah are not limited. Allah Almighty has kept the knowledge of some of them exclusively to Himself, while the creation knows more than ninety-nine names. In the Quran, there are more than ninety-nine names, and this is supported by the hadith in Al-Musnad: "I ask You by every name belonging to You by which You have named Yourself, or taught to one of Your creation, or kept to Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen with You." The preponderant opinion is that Allah's names are tawqifiyyah (restrictive, meaning they must be learned from revelation). However, there is a difference of opinion regarding the majestic name "Allah" – whether it is a proper noun that is not derived or derived from uluhiyyah (divinity). As for the Tirmidhi hadith, it is weak according to the preponderant opinion. Students of knowledge should examine academic research fairly and express their views with gentleness and wisdom.
