The wisdom behind polygyny is evident in: prohibiting adultery and providing a legitimate alternative; that marriage is not merely physical pleasure but also includes tranquility and offspring; Islam's just perspective that considers all women, including spinsters and widows; that it is not obligatory; the differing nature of women from men; addressing infertility or chronic illnesses of the wife; the wife's misconduct; the man's superior reproductive capacity; the comfort of the first wife; seeking reward; and that its permissibility is from Allah Almighty. It is also important to emphasize good companionship and that a husband should not marry a second wife if he knows that doing so would exceed the first wife's tolerance, and that he should promise her not to practice polygyny without her consent to encourage her embrace of Islam.
