For repentance to be sound and accepted, it must be sincerely for the sake of Allah Almighty, and not merely to avert immediate harm, or out of fear for one's reputation and wealth, or due to a diminished desire for the sin. Repentance must stem from fear of Allah, glorification of Him, and apprehension of losing one's standing with Him. As for the removal of the negative effects of habits, specialized doctors should be consulted regarding that.
