At what age do we allow children to act freely?

A child who reaches puberty is to be treated as an adult, and the rulings of Islamic law apply to him. His wealth is to be handed over to him if he is rational and mature, based on the Almighty’s saying: "And test the orphans until they reach the age of marriage. Then if you perceive in them sound judgment, release to them their property." (An-Nisa: 6). As for before puberty, the pen is lifted from him, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The pen is lifted from three: from the sleeper until he awakens, from the child until he reaches puberty, and from the insane person until he recovers or regains his sanity." It is recommended that he be commanded to pray and be raised upon obedience and good morals.
