What is the ruling on what is known as "test-tube babies"?
The Islamic Fiqh Academy concluded that five methods of artificial insemination are forbidden due to the resulting confusion of lineage, loss of motherhood, and other Sharia-prohibited issues. These methods are: inseminating the sperm of a man with the egg of a woman who is not his wife and implanting it in his wife's womb; inseminating the sperm of a foreign man with the wife's egg and implanting it in her womb; external insemination between the seeds of a married couple and implanting it in the womb of a volunteer woman; external insemination between foreign sperm and a foreign egg and implanting it in the wife's womb; and external insemination between the seeds of a married couple and implanting it in the womb of another wife. The Academy permitted two methods when there is a need: external insemination between the husband's sperm and his wife's egg and implanting it in her womb; and injecting the husband's sperm into the appropriate place in his wife's vagina or womb internally. Extreme caution must be exercised in this matter to avoid uncovering the woman's grave 'awrah, laboratory errors, and breaches of trust in hospitals.
