Are Al-Khidr and Elias (peace be upon them) still alive until the Hour is established?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Scholars have differed regarding the life of Al-Khidr (peace be upon him). One group, including Al-Qurtubi and Al-Nawawi, held that he is alive, while others, such as Al-Bukhari, Ibn Al-Jawzi, and Ibn Kathir, maintained that he has died. Those who assert his life cited hadiths and narrations, none of which are authentic. As for those who contend his death, they based their argument on Allah's saying: "And We did not grant to any human being before you immortality" (Quran 21:34), and on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) statement on the Day of Badr: "O Allah, if this group perishes, You will not be worshipped on Earth." They also reasoned that there is no report of him being present with the Prophet (peace be upon him) or fighting alongside him, and had he been alive, he would have been among his followers. The same applies to Elias (peace be upon him); the preponderant opinion is that he has died.
