What should I do after my father's death?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

A son should be kind to his deceased father in gratitude for his favor. This can be achieved by:

1. Supplicating for him, as the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "When a person dies, all his deeds come to an end except for three: a continuous charity, or knowledge from which benefit is derived, or a righteous child who supplicates for him."

2. Maintaining ties with his loved ones and friends, as he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The best of righteousness is for a man to uphold ties with the people his father loved after his death."

3. Fulfilling any rights due from him to Allah (such as Zakat and fasting) or to people (such as debts and trusts), as he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The debt owed to Allah is more deserving of being fulfilled."

4. Praying for them (their parents) and seeking forgiveness for them, fulfilling their pledges, maintaining the ties of kinship that are only maintained through them, and honoring their friends.

5. Giving charity on their behalf, especially continuous charity like an endowment (waqf).
