What is required of me towards my parents after their death, and what are the recommended deeds that benefit them?
Filial piety towards parents after their death is expressed through praying for them, seeking forgiveness for them, executing their will and promises, maintaining ties of kinship that are only maintained through them, and honoring their friends. It is mentioned in the that the deeds of the son of Adam cease after his death except for three, among which is: "a righteous child who supplicates for him." Also, the reward of charity reaches them by the consensus of scholars. As for dedicating the reward of reciting the Quran and similar acts, scholars have differed on this matter. The verified position is that whoever performs an action owns its reward and is entitled to gift it.
