Scholars have differed regarding the obligation for a woman to cover her face in front of non-mahram men, but they have agreed on the prohibition of uncovering it when there is a fear of fitnah (temptation/strife). According to the view that covering the face is obligatory, it is not permissible to uncover it except out of necessity. According to the view that it is permissible to uncover it when there is no fear of fitnah, there is no harm in doing so, provided that the other conditions of hijab are observed. Nevertheless, covering the face remains preferable.
