The waiting period () for a divorced woman begins from the moment the husband pronounces the divorce or from the issuance of a judicial divorce decree, not from the intention to divorce. The period during which the husband abandons his wife with the intention of divorcing her, without actually pronouncing it, does not count towards the iddah. The iddah begins even if the wife is unaware of the divorce taking place.
