Was offering condolences in mosques and dedicating a place therein for women for this purpose present during the time of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him?

It is not established that the relatives of the deceased, men and women, sat in the mosque to receive condolences during the time of the Prophet, peace be upon him. Some scholars explicitly stated that it is disliked in the mosque, and it was narrated from Imam Ahmad that he disliked it because he feared it might be an aggrandizement of death or the deceased. Therefore, the sitting for condolences in the mosque by the deceased's guardians is not legislated. However, there is no harm in a person offering condolences to a relative of the deceased if he meets them in the mosque.
