It is not permissible for a student to record or download lectures for personal use without the lecturer's permission if the lecturer objects to it, because copyrights and intellectual property rights, and the like, are protected by Islamic law, and it is not permissible to infringe upon them. Some scholars, however, have held that copying for private benefit is permissible for those in need.
