What is Allah's Greatest Name, by which if He is invoked, He responds, and if He is asked, He gives; and how can it be known, and has anyone among the people of knowledge known it and reached a consensus on it?

Several hadiths have been reported concerning Allah's Greatest Name (Ism Azam). Some indicate its presence in Surahs Al-Baqarah, Aal Imran, and Taha, while others mention it within specific supplications such as: "(The Bestower, Originator of the heavens and the earth, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor, O Ever-Living, O Self-Subsisting) or "Allah, there is no god but You, the One, the Eternal, Who did not beget and was not begotten, and to Whom no one is equal." Al-Albani graded some of these hadiths as hasan (good) and others as sahih (authentic).

Scholars have differed on the Greatest Name of Allah, holding several opinions: 1. Denial of its existence altogether: Some believe that all of Allah's names are great, and there is no preference among them. They argue that the reported hadiths indicate the greatness of the name, not its superiority, or that they refer to increased reward for the supplicant who uses it, or that what is meant is a state of complete absorption in monotheism by the supplicant. 2. Allah's exclusive knowledge of it: Others hold that Allah has kept the knowledge of this name exclusively to Himself and has not revealed it to anyone. 3. Affirmation and designation of it: Many have proceeded to designate it, and they have differed on its identification, presenting fourteen different opinions, including: "Allah," "Al-Hayy Al-Qayyum" (the Ever-Living, the Self-Subsisting), "Allah Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim" (Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful), "Al-Ahad As-Samad" (the One, the Eternal), and others. Hafiz Ibn Hajar preferred that the hadith of Buraydah: «Allah, there is no god but Him, the One, the Eternal, Who did not beget...» is the most authentic in terms of its chain of narration.

The most probable opinion, and that which is held by the majority of scholars, is that "Allah" is the Greatest Name of Allah. This is because it is the comprehensive name that refers to all of His names and attributes, it is not applied to anyone else, it is frequently mentioned in the Holy Quran, and it encompasses profound meanings. In terms of strength, the opinion that prefers "Al-Hayy Al-Qayyum" comes in second place.
