Is it permissible to marry a football player who participates in the German league?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Playing football is permissible under certain conditions: that there is no reward or money involved, that it does not lead to the exposure of the 'awrah (which for a man is from the navel to the knee), and that it does not result in missing prayers or falling into the forbidden. As for matches in which money is spent, and which occupy people, waste time, and incite tribalism, these are forbidden. Sheikh Muhammad bin Ibrahim issued a fatwa stating the impermissibility of playing football in its current form due to accompanying reprehensible matters, such as missing prayers, inciting discord and hatred, and health risks to players, in addition to its transformation from the original goal of sport to illicit financial gain. However, unorganized play between one or two people is permissible as it does not involve these prohibitions. Therefore, it is advised not to marry a professional football player until he gives it up, especially if it requires residing in disbelieving lands.
