What is the reason for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: "I seek Your forgiveness" upon leaving the restroom?

The author of 'Awn al-Ma'bood, when discussing seeking forgiveness upon exiting the lavatory, mentioned two possibilities: The first is that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, sought forgiveness for neglecting to remember Allah in that state. The second, which is more well-known, is that he sought forgiveness for his inability to adequately express gratitude for the blessing of facilitating food intake and expelling its waste with ease. Al-Mubarakpuri, in his commentary on Tirmidhi, favored the second opinion, citing the hadith (definition) of Anas: "Praise be to Allah who has removed from me the harm and granted me well-being."
