What is the ruling on selling items for more than their original price over a long period?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

There are two scenarios for increasing the price of a commodity in exchange for extending the payment period:

The first: Selling an item for more than its spot price for deferred payment. This is permissible according to the majority of scholars. This includes offering the commodity at two prices (cash and deferred) if the sale is finalized based on one of them.

The second: Concluding a contract with two deals (cash and deferred) without agreeing on one of them. This is prohibited according to the majority due to the Prophet's (peace be upon him) prohibition of "two sales in one sale."
