How should one deal with a person who started a business with fictitious capital and the intention of not repaying, then secretly left America after selling the goods without paying their dues, and upon returning home, pretended to be pious and devout, grew a long beard, and performed Hajj; should he be treated as a devout man or a swindler?

A person is weighed by their intention and the deed that emanates from that intention, not by their appearance. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, Allah does not look at your forms or your possessions, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds." Deal with your friend on this basis: if he repents, becomes upright, and returns what is due, then shake his hand. But if he insists on deception, then advise him and explain the danger of his actions. Otherwise, shun him for persisting in his disobedience, for Allah Almighty says: (And do not incline towards those who do wrong, lest the Fire touch you, and you have no protectors besides Allah, nor will you be aided.)
