Divorce occurs either by the husband initiating it, or by the ruling of a Muslim judge in certain cases. For a divorce to be validly initiated by the husband, he must be an adult, acting out of his own free will, and not under duress. Divorce is effected either by clear pronouncement or by an indirect expression coupled with the intention. The Islamically permissible divorce is for a man to divorce his wife during a period of purity (tahir) in which he has not had intercourse with her.
