What is the legal ruling regarding a husband's statement to his wife, "You are forbidden to me for a year," after an argument between them?

The prohibition of a wife (tahreem) refers back to the husband's intention. If he intended divorce, a final, irrevocable divorce occurs. Its effectiveness is not hindered by him stipulating it for a year, because divorce does not accept stipulation for a period. If he intended zihar, it occurs as a temporary zihar according to the most preponderant opinion. If he intended nothing or intended an oath by Allah Almighty, then he is bound by an expiation for an oath.
